Mexicos e-commerce grew 100,000 million pesos in 2018: AI.MX

The electronic commerce in Mexico recorded a growth of 24% during 2018, an amount equivalent to around 100,000 million pesos, to reach 491,250 million pesos.

After two years with growths lower than those recorded between 2010 and 2015, the percentage growth of the value of electronic commerce in Mexico showed a rebound in 2018, according to the calculation made by the Internet Association MX (AI.MX) in its Study on Online Shopping Habits of Internet Users in Mexico 2019, sponsored by Visa and Kueski.

While in 2016 the value of electronic commerce was 329,850 million pesos, with a growth of 28.3% compared to 2015 – the first less than 30% since 2010 – and in 2017, it reached 396,040 million pesos, with an increase of 20.1%, in 2018 the value of electronic commerce in Mexico was 491,250 million pesos (26,421.39 million dollars) and experienced a growth of 24% compared to 2017.

The study of MX Internet Association It was conducted through a survey of 1,759 interviews throughout the Mexican territory and the universe of the sample is the population of Internet users in Mexico.

Although the study – whose publication was delayed since the fourth quarter of 2019 (traditionally presented in November of each year) – reveals the calculation of the total value of electronic commerce in Mexico for 2018, most of the data it offers on the sector They correspond to the year that just ended. It even calculates a growth of 22% for the first half of 2019.

Renato Juarez, Vice President of Research of the AI.MXHe clarified that the study is published with expired data, among other reasons, to follow trends in the region. “We are the fastest growing country in the region,” he said during the presentation of the study.

Transportation, home delivery and accommodation, the best sellers
According to the study, of every 10 internet users in Mexico, 8 have made an online purchase in the last year and seven out of 10 have bought something in the most recent three months.

Transportation services (Uber, Cabify and DiDi), fast food (Rappi, DiDi Food and Uber Eats), accommodation and travel (AirBnB, Compass and Byhours); as well as the purchase of tickets for events and digital downloads are the fastest growing segments during 2019.
